resizing

better to resize first, then put into document (webpage, powerpoint) at the size you want

keeps overall file size smaller - although you can’t change your mind and enlarge with blockiness

 

some clip art resizes without distortion (vector illustrations)

bitmap graphics can be made smaller, but not larger.

 

IrfanView: File, Open

Image, Resize/Resample

Preserve aspect ratio

- you can also draw a rectangle area and Edit Crop selection

Save as: JPG

 

Office 2003/Microsoft Office Tools/MS Office Picture Manager (in Office XP it’s Photo Editor)

- add picture shortcut

- edit picture: resize, File, Save as

 do not use - it's not worth it

 

PowerPoint

Insert picture from file. Click and drag corner.

Right click to show picture toolbar, format picture, size

also crop, rotate

disadvantage: original graphic file size becomes part of ppt

IrfanView: Image, Greyscale, Negative, Enhance colors, Sharpen, Effects

Save as: JPG for photo, GIF for a transparent color

Save as JPG or GIF (no option for transparent color)

resize in IrfanView if necessary.

 

Photoshop

multiple layers, tools, anything is possible

Open, Image Resize, Copy & Paste into working document. Repeat as necessary.

Play with Select, Erase, Magic Wand, Filters, Text, Drop Shadows

Flatten, Save for Web or Help
